Red Rising (Red Rising Trilogy, #1)

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

Ender Wiggin, Katniss Everdeen and now, Darrow!

WOW. This book was a Colossal Epic! It has been a long while since I have been this addicted to a book.

At first glance, the story seems to be just another rebellion. But, even in a world where dystopian uprisings are a dime a dozen, ‘Red Rising’ manages to stand apart.

Our hero Darrow lives under the surface of Mars mining for precious minerals. He is a ‘Red’. Note: The caste system is color coded and the Reds are the lowest of the low. A heart-wrenching turn of events set in motion a grand scheme to smuggle Darrow into the Institute, an elite school for Gold (the ruling cast) students.

I have been to Battle School, Hogwarts and even the one in Oasis. But, this school simply blows them all away. Simply put, it is a Game of Thrones. It has it all - friendship, love, betrayal, trust. There are Houses and the last one standing is the winner.

The world building and the character descriptions are simply awesome. Darrow is a very complex and likable creation. Eo, Cassius, Sevro and Mustang were also immensely likable characters. The Jackal, the bad guy, was also brilliantly portrayed.

But, my personal favorite was PAX. I related Pax with the legendary ‘Luca Brasi’ in The Godfather. Pax is a fearsome warrior and Darrow’s Luca Brasi. I couldn’t stop shouting ‘Pax au Telemanus’ along with Pax as he usually does when Darrow storms a castle.

The book was so gripping and so intense that it was insanely hard to simply put it down. Begin Sidebar - My phone did the sweetest thing. He saw me reading for several hours straight and asked me to rest my eyes. Isn’t that cute. I really love my phone. End Sidebar.

Have you read the Hunger Games? Of course, you have. Do you like the Game of Thrones. Unless you have been living under a rock these last few years, of course you do. So, you are also gonna simply love the Red Rising. Just read it already!

300 years before Danaerys Stormborn was even born in Dragonstone, there were many other Targaryens, with confusing overlapping names, in Westeros. They rode dragons, whose names are even more confusing, and generally kept squabbling over that ugly iron throne.

Review: Iron Man - Extremis

Iron Man: Extremis

Iron Man: Extremis by Warren Ellis
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this a lot! The six-issue story arc goes like this:

Tony Stark gets nearly killed when a piece of shrapnel enters his chest after one of ‘Stark Industries’ bomb goes off. To make matters worse, he is captured by Al Qaeda terrorist. As in the original origin story of the movie, Tony Stark creates his first Iron Man suit and escapes.

Two scientists Killian and Hanssen have developed ‘Extremis’ serum, which gives superpowers to the drinker because, er, science.

Short story shorter, bad guy injects himself with the serum and starts killing people. Iron Man fights him and LOSES.

Iron Man takes the serum himself and kills the bad guy.

With some amazing art and an awesome storyline, Iron Man: Extremis is a must-read for MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) fans.
